Prost! Nebraska City transforms into Munich for a night of Oktoberfest fun
Prost! Nebraska City transformed into Bavaria as more than 100 people celebrated Oktoberfest Oct. 18 with a little bier, schnitzel and polka music.
The annual event, hosted by the Arbor Day Foundation, featured a buffet of German food, including pork schnitzel, pretzels, spaetzle and apple streusel. Hofbrau and Dunkel bier on tap while the crowd was entertained by the Polka Police.
Steinhart Lodge became a German bier hall, with more than a dozen people dressed in authentic Deutsch folk clothing.
The Polka Police, brothers Jamie and Jason Burmeister, entertained for about three hours, playing traditional polka music, such as “In Heaven there is No Beer.” They also added a polka flavor to Rock-and-Roll songs and a few country tunes, including “Living on a Prayer” and “Ring of Fire.”
Oktoberfest was a fundraiser for Arbor Day Foundation, which promotes planting trees and helping the environment.
Among the foundation’s goals is to help people create urban forests. It’s estimated that 70 percent of the world’s population will live in urban settings within 25 years. Planting urban forests can help with providing oxygen, as 120 trees can provide oxygen for 480 people. It’s equivalent to removing 12 automobiles from the road for a year, according to the Arbor Day Foundation.
