Who doesn’t like “fun” food?  Not seeing any hands raised. Ok, we are all on the same page! Trew Quackenbush and Corey Ward took our childhood favorites of grilled cheese sandwiches and tomato soup and gave them a fantastic tasty twist. Add in what they call fancy grilled doughnuts and you have Tom+Chee.

Think it is just way too hot for grilled cheese and tomato soup? Well, we have some refreshing Summer options for you to check out at Tom+Chee, as well as a few other regular menu items. A group of local bloggers and myself met at Tom+Chee recently to try several of their choices. Some of us were not quite sure how some items would taste based on the name. Once we tried them, we quickly agreed that they were all very tasty!

One thing that is quite evident when eating at Tom+Chee is the freshness of the food. There aren’t any freezers, fryers or microwaves. The first sample we tried was their most popular grilled cheese option – the Flying Pig. It has roasted turkey (Tom+Chee roasts all of their meats in-house), bacon, pickles, gouda, on white bread. This is one of Tim’s favorites here.

The next one we tried I was a little unsure of how the taste combination was going to be. It was the Grilled Mac and Cheese. As you would expect, it is macaroni and cheese and cheddar on hearty white bread.  The result was surprisingly good.  It was not too rich and it held up on the bread well. It also paired nicely with a compote size portion of the creamy basil tomato soup. Several of us used the soup for dipping.

Now on to some of those refreshing Summer and/or lighter options I mentioned. We tried one of their vegan/meatless options called the Hippie Chee, which is a popular item. It has hummus, cucumber, mixed greens, tomato, and cheddar on wheat berry bread. It was very tasty! It has a great crunch and fresh taste with all of those veggies.

I’ve been finding some great salads at restaurants lately that are not of the boring variety. Tom+Chee is one of these. We tried both the Green Goat salad and the Caprese salad. The Green Goat has a creamy goat cheese, dried cranberries, toasted almonds, mixed greens and a balsamic vinaigrette. We were all in love with the balsamic vinaigrette.

The Caprese salad has tomato, fresh mozzarella, basil, mixed greens and balsamic vinaigrette. Both would be great to order as smaller versions with perhaps splitting one of the grilled cheese options with your dinner companion.

Now, for the piece de resistance!  Remember that “fun” food I was talking about?  Well, you can definitely find it at Tom+Chee.  You thought it was just the fancy grilled cheese sandwiches or the refreshing salads? Well, check out – the grilled donut!  Now, you may say, what?  Believe me when I say, don’t knock it before you try it.  My favorite is a great taste for Summer.  Ok, let’s face it, any season.  It is the Strawberry Lemonade Grilled donut. It has fresh strawberries, fresh lemon zest, mascarpone, mozzarella, and all on a grilled glazed donut.

Some other options for this tasty grilled donut treat? I have yet to try it but top of my list for next time is the Smore with all of the classic campfire ingredients.  I have heard that it is a popular choice, especially among kids.  There is also the Barbara Blue, named for Tom+Chee’s Shark Tank investor Barbara Corcoran , which sounds intriguing.  It has blueberry compote, ham, brie on a glazed grilled donut. Thinking it must have a great sweet and salty taste.
