World’s largest covered wagon and time capsule are in Nebraska
The world’s largest covered wagon is in Nebraska?
We checked out the Covered Wagon on our trip to North Platte. The building is designed to look like an old covered wagon that crossed the Nebraska plains during the 1800s as part of the Oregon and Mormon Trails.
The building near the Milford exit was once home to a gas station. I remember stopping there years ago. Now, it’s home to a golf shop. The parking lot was full of campers, golf carts and other miscellaneous items.
It’s amazing the roadside attractions that you can take in when driving across a state. I’ve learned that if you see something and you want to check it out, do it. Your destination will still be there. Plus, you may miss out on an opportunity. That happened with the dinosaur that was nearby. Milford was home to a dinosaur museum and had a T-Rex near Interstate 80 to hype it. I’ve learned that the museum has closed and the dino was removed from its spot.
Sometimes, a “roadside” attraction may take you a few miles off the main road.
Seward, Neb., is home to the world’s largest time capsule. Among the items buried in 1975 was a brand new Chevy Vega. It is supposed to be opened July 4, 2025. It will have been there for 50 years.
Farther down Interstate 80 is Gothenburg. While never on the original Pony Express route, the town is home to a Pony Express relay station. It was moved there years ago, and is a bit of a tourist attraction.
A few miles northwest of Gothenburg is a true area attraction – The Swedish Crosses. They mark the final resting places as part of a small cemetery. It’s surrounded by farm fields.
I’m pretty sure people can spend lots of time pulling off for some roadside attractions. We’ve just decided that if one interests us, we’ll check it out.
Enjoy your travels.
