North Platte offers variety of food choices

Local cuisine is always high on our list when traveling. We visited a few local eateries during our visit to North Platte.

We had heard about the Lincoln Highway Diner prior to our trip west. We arrived around lunch time, so thought we’d give it a try.

Lisa ordered breakfast – a ham and cheese omelet with hash browns. I had a chicken fried steak with mashed potatoes.

Our meals were good. Hers looked better to me. I liked my lunch. Don’t get me wrong. But, her “breakfast for lunch” looked appealing.

The diner has a nice mom and pop feel to it. It has its regulars. It also has as many as newbies, like us. The staff was very nice and attentive. It was a great feeling getting personalized service. The diner on Highway 30 is small, so if it’s busy, please be patient.

As we were leaving, we met the Buffalo Bill Cody and Annie Oakley characters from the Wild West show that was going on at Nebraskaland Days. They were kind enough to pose for a picture for us. Buffalo Bill said we should come to the show that night. I told, probably as giddy as a kid meeting their hero, we had tickets. By the way, we thoroughly enjoyed the show that night.

Speaking of that evening, we tried The Depot downtown North Platte for dinner.

I had a prime rib dinner – 12 oz. of juicy prime rib cooked medium rare, with a salad, roll and baked potato for $17.95. I had the same meal in Omaha two months ago (though my prime rib then was 8 oz.) for twice that cost. I had to text our daughter Steph with that information. We laughed.

My dinner was fantastic! Every morsel was eaten (Lisa had a couple of bites of my prime rib).

Lisa had the evening special –a chimichanga. Honestly, she was not impressed. It lacked the proper spices for a Mexican dish. I tried a couple of bites and confirmed her belief.

The ambience was nice. The restaurant used a railroad theme, hence the name The Depot. We may eat there again, but I think we’re both getting the prime rib.

We had breakfast the next day back at the Lincoln diner. I think it says a lot when people choose to eat at your place consecutive days.

We both had breakfast for breakfast. LOL. I had the ham and cheese omelet. Lisa had French toast. Both dishes were tasty.

Dinner that night was at the Canteen bar and Grille in North Platte.

Lisa ordered an appetizer size of BBQ chicken pizza. It was an actual small pizza. Two people could have split it and been satisfied. I had a bite, and we both agreed it was good.

I had a burger and fries (I know, not healthy, but I wanted it). I added bacon and peanut butter. Before you say “yuck,” it’s a great combination. Our daughter Steph got me hooked on the combo at a Bellevue (NE) café.

Both meals were good.

Our service was fine. Our server paid attention to us early on, but once the food was served, she disappeared for a while. Not sure why. But, by the time she came around to check on us, we were done and ready for the ticket.

I wouldn’t let that deter us from trying the restaurant again. It could have been a million reasons as to why she didn’t check on us sooner.

Overall, we had a good dining experience during our stay in North Platte. I would eat at any of the establishments again. I think we’d know better as to what we’d order.

Keep checking out local places when traveling. We will.
