Mammoths edge Boston on Heroes Night
On a night when Omaha honored military and other uniformed “heroes,” it took a last-second field goal to pull out a 10-8 Mammoths win in FXFL action Wednesday.
Trey Barrow kicked a 46-yard field goal as time expired, after the Boston Brawlers had taken a late 8-7 lead at TD Ameritrade Park Omaha.
The Mammoths struck first when LeDarius Perkins ran in from two yards out to give Omaha a 7-0 lead after Barrow’s point-after kick.
Boston scored late following Omaha’s fifth turnover of the game. The Brawlers’ Chase Coffman guided them to the Omaha two-yard line. He connected for a 2-yard scoring pass to Jasper Collins. The 2-point conversion gave Boston the 8-7 lead, before Omaha moved into scoring range for the winning field goal.
Omaha improved to 3-1, while Boston completed its portion of the league’s inaugural season at 1-4. Omaha and Brooklyn will play for the league’s regular title Wednesday at TD Ameritrade. The Bolts handed Omaha its only loss with a 15-13 setback a couple of weeks ago in New York.
Omaha honored mostly military members in attendance during the game. The Strategic Command’s honor guard presented colors at midfield before the game, while another Air Force member sang the national anthem.
At halftime, a group of recruits reaffirmed their induction oaths.
The Mammoths introduced a couple of new mascots prior to the game. Mammoth men – guys dressed as cave men – roamed the field and stands – cheering on the Mammoths and engaging fans for support.
