Portions big enough to share. That’s what you’ll get at McAlister’s Deli. And the menu is designed to be food to share. Omaha’s newest restaurant believes food is a labor of love and meant to be shared.

Our recent visit to the location at 603 S. 72nd proved that sharing food is a good thing. How about a baked potato the size of Sasquatch’s foot? OK, maybe not THAT large, but large enough for at least two people to enjoy together. I ordered the Spud Ole, which includes cheddar-jack cheese, chili and jalapenos that will make you sweat. The restaurant offers six types of baked potatoes, from its basic Justaspud to the SpudMax, featuring three types of meat, cheese, green onions and black olives.

With nearly 100 items on the menu, the sandwiches rival any deli this side of New York City. Using special blends for its mustards and dressings, each sandwich provides its own unique taste. I had a McAlister’s Club with its own honey mustard topping a mix of smoked turkey, Black Forest ham, bacon, two types of cheese and veggies. The honey mustard stood out as a flavor enhancement on the sandwich. The wheat bread was soft and delicious.

The Atlanta-based company opens several franchised locations throughout the year. The 72nd Street location is the fifth opened in Nebraska and Iowa within the last 12 months. As the deli grows in popularity, more locations will be planned. Open for more than 30 years, the company has at least 400 restaurants in 28 states.

Delicious menu

I have eaten at McAlister’s before. During a business trip with a former company, a colleague and I ate at a Texarkana, Texas, restaurant twice during a weeklong stay. We were that impressed. The food is delicious. The service is great. And the prices are competitive. How about a Choose 2 menu with options of a half-sandwich, salad or potato with a cup of soup for less than $8?

The deli includes the calorie counts on the menu board for full and half orders, so as you plan your meal, you can consider the calorie options. Since it is a southern-based company, McAlister’s offers sweet tea among its drink options. Water, soda and unsweetened tea are also available.

The restaurant has a kid’s menu, which includes some nice options for young diners. The two children at our table enjoyed a roll-up (wrap featuring a variety of meats) and a cup of mac and cheese. In fact, the mac and cheese fan thought she might order a second serving.

McAlister’s Deli also offers vegan and vegetarian options.
