Vacation time cometh
A vacation we have been looking forward to for several months is just now days away.
We are traveling to the Northlands – Wisconsin, Upper Michigan and northeastern Minnesota.
We have a jam-packed itinerary. If we do everything we have listed on the itinerary we will be pushing 50 items. Mind you, some of them will be knocked off at the same time. In example, while in Milwaukee, we want to walk the River Walk, see the Bronze Fonz statue and dine at the Safe House restaurant. All three of those can be done close together. A lot of things we want to do will be like that.
We are kicking off our trip Friday afternoon with a jaunt to Dyersville, Iowa. Baseball movie fans may recall this is as the location where “Field of Dreams” was filmed. Yep, we are going to visit the field. At least, see the marker, and hopefully the field. It is on our way to our first major stop – Spring Green, WI, and the House on the Rocks. This is a kitschy off-the-main road attraction that I have been told will amaze us.
Afterwards, we are off to Madison and a tour of the Wisconsin state capitol.
We are spending four nights in Milwaukee and taking in several attractions – Milwaukee Zoo, Miller Brewery, Milwaukee Art Museum, Harley-Davidson Museum and a lake cruise, to name a few.
Following Milwaukee will be a short stop in Green Bay to take some pics of Lambeau Field and a few other Packer items. While not a Packers fan, I do acknowledge the role the city and franchise played in the early days of professional football, and the visit is based on that perspective.
We plan another kitschy, touristy stop in Iron Mountain, MI. We are visiting the Iron Mountain Mine and Museum.
Then, it’s off to St. Ignace and Mackinac Island, MI, for two days. Lots of things to do in that area – attractions on Mackinac Island, and Fort Mackinac. We hope to drive up to Sault Ste. Marie and see the Locks while we are there. A possible evening trip to Mackinaw City and the Lumberjack Show is tentative.
Following our visit there, we are off to a long day of sightseeing – including seeing the bell from the Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald – and driving to Duluth, MN. We have a day set aside to drive the Northshore Scenic Route along Lake Superior. A drive to Thunder Bay, Ontario, is planned as part of that day trip.
On the way back to Omaha is a day in the Twin Cities – visiting the Minnesota Zoo, state capitol and the Mall of America. We haven’t been in the Cities in a few years, so looking forward to it.
I hope to post some stories, but will definitely aim to post a picture or 200 (as my kids like to point out), during the trip.
Anyhoo, tis vacation time and I really am looking forward to this getaway. Have a great time on your vacations this year, as well.
