Atchison’s Tuck U Inn provides a historical, comfortable stay
I was afraid to touch anything in the house when I arrived at the Tuck U Inn bed and breakfast in Atchison, Kansas. A mansion that once belonged to a former Kansas governor is immaculately decorated with vases and lots of other breakables that makes someone like me feel like a bull in a China shop. Did I mention that it’s beautiful?
It served as the base of operations during a visit hosted by the Atchison visitors bureau. In a city known for its haunted houses, I felt nothing but comfort at the Tuck U Inn. I stayed in the Eisenhower room, named for the 34th President of the United States. A Kansas native, Eisenhower was the commanding officer for the D-Day invasion of Europe in 1944, which led to the end of World War II. As president, he completed desegregating the military and also created the modern Interstate system.
My room was beautiful. The king-sized bed gave me more than enough room to roll around in. Yet, the other half of the bed remained perfectly smooth. The bed was super comfortable, with a poster frame. I loved that my room had old typewriters and books. I relaxed both nights of my stay, enjoying a drink while lounging on the sofa reviewing photos taken during the day.
Owners for 14 years
When the opportunity arose to take over the Glick Mansion – named after former Gov. George W. Glick – Chris and Loman Wildly relished the opportunity to run a bed and breakfast. Glick served two years as the state’s ninth governor after being elected in 1882. He created the railroad commission and played a major role in improving the state’s agriculture industry. The Glick family lived in the mansion for about 40 years, which was built in 1873. The Wildlys bought the mansion in 2004 and have built a notable bed and breakfast. The house is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
Chris is a master chef in the kitchen. Her breakfasts were magazine quality. I felt like a judge on one of Gordon Ramsey’s shows, tasting a fresh fruit parfait one morning and a delicious sorbet the next. From an impressive quiche to cinnamon rolls, her culinary skills are beyond challenging.
Loman acted as our server during meals. He sets out fresh coffee in the upstairs entryway each morning at 7. They ask to enjoy your caffeine fix in your room, and not bring a cup downstairs, in order to prevent spilling on rugs, etc. Loman serves a delicious cup during breakfast, too. Loman also serves as the maintenance person, including mowing the property, which sits atop a hill.
For a comfortable stay at a comfortable price, I recommend staying at the Tuck U Inn at Glick Mansion. You will thank me.
