Hallmark: Celebrating Mother’s Day

Millions of moms around the world will open that special envelope today. The Mother’s Day card. And you know your kid cared enough to give you the very best if it says Hallmark. Or so the tagline goes.

Actually, Mother’s Day cards can be traced back to the Kansas City-based company. While Mother’s Day has been celebrated for a little more than 100 years, the card has been around since the 1920s.

Hallmark was the leader and innovator of the Mother’s Day card, as it has been with most greeting cards. The first cards had color added by hand, according to Hallmark.

The pansy card came about in the late 1930s and was quickly associated with Mother’s Day. Since then, of course, the styles and sizes of greeting cards have grown.

The Hallmark visitors center offers some great insight into the company’s history. The center, located at the Crown Center Mall, is near the company’s headquarters.

Hallmark was founded by Nebraskans, led by Joyce Hall. Originally from David City, Hall sought to grow the family’s card business. His endeavors brought him to Kansas City. The rest is history.

After a few setbacks, the Hall greeting card business blossomed. Hallmark is probably the best known of the greeting card companies.

To remain relevant in an ever changing environment, Hallmark has expanded to offering cards online for all types of celebrations, including Mom’s day.

Since it’s Mother’s Day and everyone gets sentimental about their mom, you know Hallmark knows how to market that, too. Hallmark can tug at a person’s emotions through greeting cards, as well as television programs.

Hallmark TV? Yep. It has produced some of the best and most emotion-tugging programs you will ever see. I don’t care how stone cold you are, I dare you to keep a dry eye watching their movies. There’s a reason Hallmark has won multiple Emmy Awards, as well as others.

So, as we celebrate all things Mom today, we’d like to wish everyone a Happy Mother’s Day.
